Local Walks in the Lake District
Fell walkers are in an ideal location for an early start after breakfast. The hotel is a perfect place to begin a variety of walks requiring different levels of experience and strength. Choose from the beauty of the falls at Aira Force or the challenge of Striding Edge and Helvellyn.
Popular walks…
Steamer and walk
Take the steamer from Glenridding to Howtown stop for a coffee at the Howtown Hotel before you start the return walk to Patterdale.
By crossing the lake first you will be walking towards the best views and not to the constraints of the steamer timetable.
Deepdale Beck
Turn right out of the hotel and drive or walk to Deepdale Bridge. Parking can be difficult to find at busy times. Walk alongside this pretty beck until you are hungry.
Dovedale Beck
As for Deepdale but drive or walk as far as Cow Bridge. Again we warn you about parking at busy times. Walk through the woodland enjoying the views of Brotherswater, then out of the valley along the beck to one of the quietest Lakeland spots.
Aira Force
Travel north from the hotel through Glenridding and follow the lake for approximately 2.5 miles to the national Trust car park. This beautiful but steep, at times, walk follows both sides of the fall.
Once photos have been taken at the top, either descend back to the car park or carry on the path to Dockray to the Royal Hotel Public House.
Place Fell
Place Fell can be found opposite the hotel.
From the summit the view of the lake, valley and Helvellyn are spectacular. From here you can descend the same way or continue past High Dodd and down to Sandwick to follow the lake home.
Grisedale Beck
Take the road towards Glenridding and the first turn left after the church. This gentle walk through very impressive scenery captures all of the attributes we associate with the Lake District.
Glenridding Vale
From Glenridding car park, take the path leading to Helvellyn. This walk involves some climbing but allows you a fabulous view across the lake towards Place Fell on your return. The turning point takes you across Glenridding Beck above the hydro plant that is reported to provide enough power to support Patterdale and Glenridding.
Helvellyn
Follow the path from Glenridding car park to climb the third highest mountain in the Lake District.
Striding Edge makes this a difficult and popular walk for the more experienced fell walker.
